The best tennis returns to Villena: the Alicante Ferrero Challenger 2025 begins
From September 28 to October 5, the JC Ferrero Tennis Academy will once again become the epicenter of international tennis with a new edition of the Alicante Ferrero Challenger. A tournament that, edition after edition, has not only consolidated its prestige within the ATP Challenger circuit, but has also become a real springboard for the future stars of world tennis.
“Organizing this tournament is a source of pride for us,” says Juan Carlos Ferrero, former world number one. “Beyond the sporting level, it represents our commitment and passion for tennis. We want all players and fans to have an unforgettable experience,” he says.
The list of players confirmed for this edition leaves no doubt that the level of tennis will be very high. The public will be able to enjoy the return of big names from the ATP circuit and young talents set to mark the next decade of tennis.
Among them is Pablo Carreño Busta, former world number 10, Olympic medalist, and Masters 1000 champion, among other achievements. The Asturian returns home to the JC Ferrero Tennis Academy, where he trained as a player. Joining him will be another renowned Spaniard, national tennis legend, and Monte Carlo finalist: Albert Ramos-Viñolas.
They will be joined by Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff (ATP No. 98), recent champion in Munich and former finalist at the Madrid Masters 1000 against Carlos Alcaraz. His powerful serve and aggressive style make him a crowd favorite.
Chilean Nicolás Jarry, currently number one in his country and recent finalist at the Rome Masters 1000 (2024), will also be looking to make his mark in Alicante with his powerful and versatile game.
From the new generation, Madrid's Martín Landaluce —2022 US Open junior champion—returns after reaching the semifinals last year. With his sights set on Next Gen Finals, he will be looking to continue climbing the rankings.
There will also be no shortage of talent from the academy itself, such as the American Darwin Blanch, his country's number one under-18 player, and the youngest Spaniard under 17 with the best ATP ranking: Quique Carrascosa.
Also participating will be promising Spaniard Daniel Mérida, who is enjoying his best season yet and aiming to win his first Challenger title after already lifting five ITF trophies.
Another emerging young star is Justin Engel, a 17-year-old German who has already made history on the ATP Tour by becoming the first player born in 2007 to win a match in a main draw. A possible match between Engel and Blanch could become a historic encounter, just as the clash between Alcaraz and Sinner was a few years ago.
The tournament will open its doors on Sunday, September 28, with the preliminary round and a special open house 11:00 a.m., where everyone is invited. Starting on Monday, the action won't stop:
- Monday, September 29, and Tuesday, September 30: First round of the main draw (11:00 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.)
- Wednesday, October 1, and Thursday, October 2: Round of 16 (12:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.)
- Friday, October 3: Quarterfinals (11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.)
- Saturday 4: Semifinals (12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.) and doubles final (4:00 p.m.)
- Sunday 5: Singles final at 11:00 a.m.
