CARLOS ALCARAZ, WITH SAMUEL LOPEZ AS HIS HEAD COACH, CONQUERS AUSTRALIA
The Spanish tennis player was crowned champion of the Australian Open after a high-voltage final. It was not just any final because Novak Djokovic was on the other side of the net.
The Murcia native reached the final after playing an epic semifinal against Zverev that lasted almost five and a half hours and suffering from cramps starting in the third set. In this final, the start was also tough. The Serbian came out strong and precise and took the first set with authority. But Alcaraz did not lose his composure. Little by little, he began to find depth with his forehand, to make Djokovic uncomfortable with his return and to loosen up with his serve. The second set marked the turning point: the feeling that the match was changing hands.
From then on, Carlos Alcaraz grew in confidence. The third set was a statement of intent, and the fourth, consolidation. Djokovic resisted, saved break points, and pushed his options to the limit, but the Murcian kept his cool until the last game, when he sealed the victory and collapsed onto the blue court in Melbourne. Australia has a new champion. With this title, Carlos Alcaraz completes the four Grand Slams and becomes the youngest tennis player to do so.
Carlitos' hard work throughout his professional career has led him to achieve some of the most impressive milestones of precocity in tennis history. The Academy is proud to have contributed to these milestones. The fact that first Juan Carlos, and now Samuel López, both members of the Academy since its inception, are leading this project is incredible and the result of constant work.
