Carreño shines at home and will face Hugo Grenier in the final
The crowd at the Alicante Ferrero Challenger enjoyed an unforgettable day today on the seventh day of the tournament. Pablo Carreño, one of the big names trained at the academy, put in an outstanding performance against Czech Petr Brunclik, whom he defeated 6-4, 6-3, displaying solid tennis full of excitement.
The Asturian, cheered on by the fans who filled the stands, was unbeatable throughout the match. Each point he won drew applause and, with the confidence of playing at home, he put on a show that reminded everyone why he is one of the most iconic players trained at the JC Ferrero Tennis Academy (Carreño trained at the academy from 2016 to 2024 inclusive). With this victory, he secures a place in the grand final, where he will seek to add a new trophy to his collection, precisely on the courts where he grew up as a player.
Meanwhile, the young Brunclik, aged just 19, had the best tournament of his career and is now considered a player to watch in upcoming competitions.
His opponent will be Hugo Grenier, who also had an epic afternoon. The Frenchman defeated Spain's Daniel Mérida in an intense match, coming back from 4-1 down in the second set to win in two. Grenier, who will be playing in his third final in this tournament, will not be an easy opponent for the Spaniard, as he has 14 wins and three losses in the tournament's history, as well as having been a finalist three times.
This Sunday's final promises to be a high-level duel. Memories remain of the last Spanish finalists at the Alicante Ferrero Challenger, Carlos Alcaraz and Pedro Martínez in 2020, and now, with Carreño back home, fans dream of seeing one of their own lift the title again.
In the doubles, the day ended with a victory for the pair formed by Sander Gille and Sem Verbeek, who won a very competitive match against the Czech pair Nouza and Rikl, crowning themselves champions with confidence and solidity and putting the perfect finishing touch to a day full of excitement and high-level tennis in Villena.
