SEMIFINALISTS SET AT THE ITF J300 VILLENA

The Eduardo Ferreor Memorial, hosted by the JC Ferrero Tennis Academy, is entering its final stage. On Thursday, the doubles finalists and the singles semifinalists were decided.

The women’s draw features three of the top seeds. The upset came from Italy’s Angellica Sara, who defeated the second seed 7-6(5), 6-1. The top seed also came close to elimination: Germany’s Mariella Thamm (1) had to come from behind to stay alive in the tournament. The world No. 22 in juniors and now No. 615 on the professional circuit managed to turn the match around and advance with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory. India’s Maaya Rajeshwaran (4) had an easier time, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, as did Spain’s Paola Piñera (3), who won 6-0, 6-3 and became the only player in the tournament not to have dropped a single set.

In the boys’ draw, the gap between the top seeds and the rest of the field has been narrower. Only Bulgaria’s Dimitar Kisimov (2) has reached the semifinals among the favorites. His opponent will be Poland’s Tymon Litwic, who defeated Ferrero Academy player Maxi Carrascosa today—a player who had an eight-match winning streak on clay and, despite the loss, has managed to break into the junior Top 100 thanks to these results. Better news for the other Spaniard still in the running. Alberto Pulido faced Germany’s Christopher Thies for a spot in the final. The match seemed to be on track at 6-0, 4-2 with Pulido serving, but it ultimately came down to small details. The German raised his level and played a very tough match that made Pulido sweat. Finally, the Spaniard managed to break his opponent in a nail-biting twelfth game of the third set, which spared him another tiebreak and sent him to the semifinals 6-0, 6-7(3), 7-5. The Canary Islander will face Italian Raffaele Ciurnelli, who played at a high level and defeated the top favorite for the title, Frenchman Mathys Domenc (1), in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Pulido maintained his level of play in the doubles match and, alongside Eudald González, will compete for the championship title this Friday. They secured a comfortable victory. In the final, they will face the Polish duo of Blus and Litwic.

The tournament semifinals will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the Spanish players competing on the tournament’s main court. The finals will be played again at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 21. The tournament is open to the public so that fans in the region can see firsthand the caliber of tomorrow’s tennis stars
